Chapter Fifteen

One by one, small clusters of our team trickled out of the building, staying within sight of each other. Karl, Jeff, and Jenifer filed out in front of us.

“You ready?” Gavin whispered into my ear.

Shivers ran down my spine, and not exactly from his nearness. I gave an abrupt nod, and Gavin took off. I rushed to keep up with him, barely making it to his post before he bolted again.

This time when I reached him, he hissed, “Eyes behind! Eyes behind!”

I frantically looked back to see the doctor and Peaches catching up. I turned just in time to see Gavin take off once again.

“Good grief,” I muttered as I trailed behind.

We kept up the ridiculous game for quite some time—dodging cars, racing around buildings, sprinting across streets—until Gavin halted behind a large, overturned garbage bin. I made it to his side, gasping for air. I almost ran into him when he didn’t move right away.

“What—ah—what is it? Is—whew—are they moving?” I dragged in long gulps of air, resting my hands on my knees. And I thought I was in shape.

“Don’t know,” Gavin muttered. “Come on, come on!” he groaned to the group ahead of us, although they couldn’t hear him. “Don’t get separated from the rest of the group!”

I looked back at David and Peaches, who had questioning looks on their faces. I shrugged and turned my attention back to Gavin.

“What do you see?” I asked.

“They aren’t moving. Why aren’t we moving?”

Gavin was itching to go find out what the problem was. As much as I didn’t want to stay here, just waiting to be discovered, I didn’t want to rush into trouble, either.

I checked on the team behind us just as two gnarly, ashen hands reached around Peaches and pulled her from sight. My heart nearly stopped as her screams echoed around us. The doctor spun to help her, running around the corner.

Gripping my shotgun tighter, I bolted in their direction. Gavin passed me, sprinting around the corner before I could. Sam had warned us not to fire our weapons until we reached the bus, if at all possible. I heard two loud thuds as I rounded the corner and saw Gavin using his rifle like a club on two zombies latched onto David. Where was Peaches? My eyes riveted on a trail of blood leading into a cluster of bushes.

While Gavin was helping a badly wounded David, I clutched my gun and inched toward the shrubbery. Heartrending, guttural noises sickened me, and I pushed the blood-smeared branches aside with the tip of my shotgun, bracing myself. The noises stopped, and my eyes darted around someone’s deserted backyard. Blood was splattered everywhere, but no Peaches. I hesitated, not sure whether to follow or run.

Just as I’d made up my mind to find her, she flew at me—her hands closing around my throat. I didn’t even see her coming. I shrieked and dropped my gun, my hands covering hers. Blood streamed down her face, and her eyes were starting to glaze over.
